Abstract: Code-switching cost and its asymmetric processing mechanism are key issues in bilingual control research. Through
reviewing and analyzing the ERP components such as (E) LAN, N400, and LPC induced by code switching in bilinguals' language
comprehension, this paper verifies the existence of code-switching cost and the asymmetric processing mechanism of code-switching.
It is also pointed out that there is still great controversy over the latency, amplitude and brain area distribution of ERP components
induced by switching processing in different switching directions. Additionally, the code-switching cost in bilingual comprehension
may originate from the bottom-up activation of two languages inside the mental lexicon and the top-down cognitive control outside the
mental lexicon.
